According to an open letter published online on April 1 by Russian embassy personnel in North Korea, many foreign personnel in North Korea have left Pyongyang because of a lack of basic necessities and restrictions on their movement, Deutsche Welle reported.
According to the report, the open letter reveals that the situation is unbearable because of difficulties in obtaining basic necessities, including medicines, unresolved health problems and restrictions on personal freedom. As a result of this, many diplomats in North Korea have fled.
There are pictures showing Russian diplomats having to carry their luggage on human-powered railroad cars for the last leg of their journey inside North Korea.
A Human Rights Watch report published in March noted that trade between China and North Korea has plummeted over the past year, especially as food and medicine imports from North Korea have fallen sharply, and that flooding has exacerbated the lack of livelihood supplies.
The Deutsche Welle report also noted that although North Korea has officially declared no cases in the country since the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, this claim has so far been widely disputed.
