The White House confirmed that Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will visit the White House on April 16, making him the first foreign leader to visit the United States since President Biden took office. The U.S. will also begin discussions again with the European Union, Russia and the Chinese Communist Party, which negotiated and signed the Iran nuclear deal, on how to deal with the Iranian nuclear weapons issue. This year, President Biden issued a special statement in memory of the victims of the Holocaust on April 4, Easter Day, which is also Holocaust Memorial Day.
The White House previously announced that, due to the new crown epidemic, President Biden would first meet with leaders by video and telephone after taking office, and that the first foreign leader to be invited to the White House during the Biden administration would be Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga after the situation had subsided. President Biden looks forward to welcoming Japanese Prime Minister Kan to the White House on Friday, April 16,” Sharkey said. This will be the first foreign leader to visit in person during the Biden-Harris administration and reflects the importance we place on the U.S.-Japan bilateral relationship, our friendship and partnership with the people of Japan.”
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan met with Japanese National Security Chief Shigeru Kitamura and Seo Kaoru, head of South Korea’s National Security Office at Cheong Wa Dae, for a three-way meeting at the U.S. Naval Academy on April 2. The three issued a statement after the meeting, saying they discussed North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs and reaffirmed their cooperation in promoting North Korea’s denuclearization and international cooperation to implement U.N. sanctions against the country. Japan and South Korea reiterated the importance of their relationship and the trilateral relationship between the U.S., Japan and South Korea to promote security in the region and around the world. The three sides also talked about fighting the Chinese Communist virus epidemic, combating climate change, and cooperating to bring democracy back to Burma. The U.S., Japan and South Korea will be linked by the democratic values of the three countries.
After Iran withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal during the Trump administration, the U.S. imposed new sanctions on it after Iran said it was in compliance with the deal and began restarting its uranium enrichment program. Other countries that are signatories to the Iran nuclear deal have remained in the deal. After taking office, the Biden administration repeatedly expressed its willingness to negotiate with Iran through diplomatic means to bring the two sides back into the deal, and on April 2 White House spokeswoman Chuckie confirmed that new talks with negotiating partners were about to begin. We have agreed to participate in talks with Europe, Russia and the Chinese Communist Party to identify the issues needed to return to compliance with the Iran nuclear deal with Iran,” Sharkey said. We welcome this progress, which could be a constructive early step, even though the diplomatic path that follows could be as long as the first negotiations on the Iran nuclear deal. These negotiations will be conducted in working groups, which the EU will form with other partners still in the Iran nuclear deal, including with Iran. The main topics of discussion will be the nuclear steps Iran can take to return to compliance with the Iran nuclear deal, and the possibility that the U.S. can ease those sanctions and return to the deal. We do not expect direct negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, but we remain open to that.”
This year, President Biden issued a statement honoring the victims of the Holocaust on April 4, Easter Day, which is also Holocaust Memorial Day:
On Holocaust Memorial Day, we stand with the Jewish community in the United States, Israel and around the world to remember and reflect on the horrors of the Jewish Holocaust. An estimated six million Jews, along with millions of other persecuted Roma, Sinti, Slavs, people with disabilities, LGBTQ people, and other communities systematically murdered by the Nazis and their co-conspirators, suffered the cruelest and most heinous actions in history.
I hereby proclaim April 4 through April 11, 2021, as a week of remembrance for Holocaust Memorial Day and call on all Americans to honor the memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
President Biden spends the Easter holiday weekend with his family at Camp David.
