According to the New York Post, state lawmakers and New York Governor Cuomo are negotiating details of an “Excluded Worker Fund” that would be included in the state’s budget for the new fiscal year. The program was proposed in the New York State House and Senate two weeks ago to help residents who do not qualify for federal assistance, such as those living in the United States illegally or those recently released from prison.
The amount of benefits provided to these two groups of people would be comparable to the weekly federal or New York State unemployment benefits of about $500 per week; according to the New York Post, there are approximately 187,000 undocumented immigrants in New York State and 87,000 recently jailed.
A report released March 18 by the Fiscal Policy Institute (Fiscal Policy Institute) shows that both groups could receive up to $28,600 in benefits if they are unemployed from the start of the epidemic in March 2020 until March of this year, and $17,500 from April to December of this year.
After the news broke, legislators opposed to the program argued that it was fiscally irresponsible to launch the program in New York State, which is experiencing financial difficulties due to the impact of the epidemic.
New York State Senator Daphne Jordan (D) issued a statement on March 31 noting that the outrageous plan is the latest item in the New York State government’s misplaced priorities and that “it makes no sense to give the billions of dollars that people pay in taxes, to illegal immigrants and convicted felons.”
