The U.K. Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said today that 30 people who received the Oxford-AstraZeneca 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine have developed blood clots, including seven deaths.
Several European countries have announced a moratorium on the AZ vaccine due to its possible association with blood clots.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said the government’s website received 30 reports of blood clots after 18.1 million people were vaccinated with the AZ vaccine in the country.
The agency said in a statement today, “As of March 24, a total of 30 cases of blood clots have been reported, of which seven people have tragically lost their lives.”
The Netherlands announced a moratorium on AZ vaccinations for people under 60 years of age on the 2nd after five new cases of blood clots were reported, including one death.
Germany also announced a similar decision earlier this week.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is expected to announce its latest recommendations on the subject on April 7. The EU Medicines Agency, like the World Health Organization (WHO), has previously declared the AZ vaccine safe.
On March 31, the European Medicines Agency again stated that it believes the vaccine is safe and that experts have not identified any specific risk factors, such as age, gender or medical history.
