“Look at India, it’s dirty!” Trump’s words set off a bomb, Indian netizens rage Modi’s reply

The final debate of the 2020 US presidential election was held on 22nd local time at Belmont University in Tennessee and was moderated by NBC’s Kristen Welker and focused on six themes: the new crown epidemic, the American family, race in America, climate change, national security and leadership, according to Indian media reports.

When it comes to climate change, US President Donald Trump is once again pointing to Russia, India and China as “excuses” to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Trump reportedly began by praising himself, declaring, “We’ve done an outstanding job on the environment, we have the cleanest air, the cleanest water and the best carbon emissions targets we’ve seen in years, and we’re not destroying our businesses.”

Next, Trump began to “disparage” other countries. Trump said, “Look at China, how dirty it is, look at Russia, look at India – it’s dirty there, the air is dirty! I withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement because we took out a huge amount of money and were treated ‘very unfairly’.”

Just days before Trump’s remarks, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense Esper reportedly visited India for talks on an increasingly close US-India partnership between the two sides.

The Indian media pointed out that this was not the first time Trump had critically mentioned India in a debate. In the first U.S. presidential election debate, Trump had questioned India’s new coronary pneumonia epidemic data. He said, “When talking about numbers, you also don’t know how many people have died in India. They don’t exactly give a number.”

Trump’s remarks have sparked strong reactions in India, provoking outrage from Indian netizens. Some have accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of taking digs at his “good relationship” with Trump and urged him to strongly refute Trump’s statement.

A netizen sarcastically said, “The fruits of Trump’s friendship: 1. Questioning the number of people diagnosed with neo-coronary pneumonia in India; 2. Saying that India releases dust into the air and calling it ‘dirty air’; 3. Calling India the ‘king of tariffs’. This is the result of ‘Hello Modi’ (Howdy Modi)!” Some netizens directly Ait Modi and shouted at Modi to listen to what Trump has to say. Some other netizens directly called out Modi to come out with a reply, urging Modi to respond strongly to Trump. In addition, some opponents of Modi have spoken out and accused Modi of consistently compromising with the US, making Trump insult India time and again. Some have also expressed the hope that the Modi government will take a lesson and take care of the problem of air pollution in India.
