Lei Jun, founder and CEO of Xiaomi, said at the event that the company planned the design of the new logo in 2017, and eventually received help from designer Kenya Hara, artistic director of Japanese retailer MUJI, to complete the work in three years.
Founder and CEO Lei Jun said at the event that the design now features a “squirrel-shaped” rounded logo, replacing the previous sharp corners. The new design is said to have cost 2 million yuan.
Comparison of Xiaomi’s old and new logos
One Weibo user commented on Xiaomi’s post about the new logo, saying, “I think Mr. Lei is getting screwed. Another Weibo user wrote, “Give me 200 I can also give him a whole lot of this.” “I’m on I can do it.” “People are stupid and have a lot of money,” “Spend how much money injustice, to show how much they have the temperament.”
There are also microbloggers said, “There is a ghostwriter invented the Xiaomi logo generator, so we all use the logo of 2 million.” “The new logo PPT software can be shaped in a minute.”
Lei Jun admitted at the event that people might find the new logo similar to the original. “Are you disappointed with the logo because we just made the original logo more round?” He asked the audience.
Lei Jun then posted a post on his official WeChat account. “I think a lot of people would say, ‘Really? That took three years?'” He wrote, but Lei said the change represented an improvement in the company’s “inner spirit and quality.
MUJI designer Kenya Hara also explained his view of the design, saying that “more work needs to be done than simply fixing the edges.” In a five-minute pre-recorded video shown at the event, Kenya Hara said, “He sought the best shape for combining circles and squares by extensively studying shapes and applying mathematical equations.”
According to Kenya Hara, a perfect balance was struck between the two. In addition to changing the shape of the orange background, Kenya Hara adjusted the layout curve of the “mi” letters to match the rest of the design.
Lei said he was moved by Kenya Hara’s suggestion that the new logo include “Eastern philosophical thinking. He said that when he first saw the logo, he didn’t understand it either, but after hearing the design presentation, he felt it was excellent!
Mainland netizens lamented that the summary is “fooled”. However, some netizens said, you think this Japanese art master made Lei Jun fooled, but in fact Lei Jun attracted online traffic through this matter.
