The term Jim Crow originated in the 1830s, when Rice, a white actor in the American South, made a point of pretending to be black, mimicking the actions of black people talking, walking and singing to make the public laugh, and gave the black avatar the name Daddy Jim Crow. Over time, the term Jim Crow has evolved into a synonym for white America’s mockery and contempt for black Americans.
