Myanmar fears civil war, U.N. envoy urges Security Council action

The United Nations Special Envoy for Myanmar today pleaded with the Security Council to take action in response to the worsening crisis in the country and warned that the military government’s violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations threatens to erupt into civil war and “massacre.

The daily demonstrations have claimed more than 520 lives since the military overthrew elected leader Ung San Suu Kyi on Feb. 1, bringing an abrupt end to a decade-long experiment in democracy.

According to content obtained by AFP, UN Special Envoy for Burma Christine Schraner Burgener told a closed-door meeting, “I call on the Security Council to consider all the tools and to act collectively to do what is right, what should be done for the Burmese, to avoid disaster on all sides.”

She said she remains open to dialogue with the junta, but “if we just wait for them to be ready, the actual situation will only get worse. A massacre is about to happen.”
