Since Hong Kong Director of Broadcasting Lee Pak Chuen took office earlier this month, Radio Television Hong Kong‘s programs have been subject to successive overhauls, with new changes occurring at the station again on Wednesday (March 31).
According to Hong Kong media reports, following the cancellation of several programs earlier, RTHK received another notice from the management on March 31, asking all departments to suspend the submission of entries. For the entries already sent, the station will write to the organizer to return them.
It is understood that the events that RTHK requested to withdraw include the local Hong Kong Consumer Rights News Awards and the international American International Film and Television Festival.
A spokesman for RTHK said the station is reviewing all aspects of its work in accordance with the “Report on the Review of the Governance and Management of Radio Television Hong Kong”, including a review of the mechanism for nominating TV and radio programs for local, mainland and international awards. During this period, RTHK will not participate in the selection of any awards, and nominations for awards already entered will be withdrawn.
The Human Rights Press Awards, co-organized by Amnesty International Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Journalists Association and the Regents’ Association, said on Facebook on Wednesday that it had received notification from RTHK executives to withdraw all entries for the awards, but because the selection process is ongoing and can only be withdrawn by the entrants themselves, RTHK’s entry was not withdrawn.
