March 30, 2021, Executive President Su Tseng-chang: The government will refer to international practices to decide whether to participate in the Winter Olympics.
After the meeting, Vice President of the Chinese Olympic Committee Cai Chi-Ju was pressed by reporters, 150 human rights organizations around the world have called for a boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing next year, what is Taiwan‘s attitude? He responded that he had not yet received news that a country would not participate in the competition, and that the issue of the Winter Olympics and Xinjiang was not discussed during the meeting. Cai Zhijue said that today’s issue is focused on this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo
Cai Zhijue said: No, especially we are today before and during the meeting, both sides did not mention the issue of Xinjiang. The biggest event in our sports sector this year should be the Tokyo Olympics. The most important thing is to look forward to cooperating with the relevant units to do the training (players) work, hoping that the Tokyo Olympics can reach Taiwan and the people of the country, for the delegation’s expectations.
Taiwan politicians are worried that the Chinese side will politicize sports and use the video conference to influence Taiwan’s participation in the Winter Olympics.
Executive President Su Tseng-chang met with reporters and responded to the issue of boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics, saying that the government would make appropriate measures to respond.
The Chinese Communist Party‘s human rights, military expansion, regional peace and so on, are not appreciated by the world, and we all know very well that the Chinese Communist Party, after its power has increased, is doing nothing to help world peace and regional stability, and we are deeply unimpressed by the Chinese Communist Party’s various practices that violate human rights and the detention of Hong Kong people. We will refer to all international practices and we will have appropriate responses.
Su criticized the Chinese side has been suppressing Taiwan’s struggle for international space, blocking Taiwan’s participation in international activities.
Su said: blocking Taiwan’s various free, equal and meaningful participation is very unworthy, (should) let people see the responsible attitude of a big country. Yesterday the president of Palau said well: “You can’t force your wife to love you with your fists.” China’s constant use of various methods, including military aircraft circling Taiwan and so on, and then hindering Taiwan’s international space, will only add to the ill feelings of the Taiwanese people and will not help the improvement of cross-strait relations.
Presidential spokesman Zhang Dunhan said that the Winter Olympics is an important event in the international sports arena and the related preparation process must respect the decision of the International Olympic Committee. At present, Taiwan and the international winter Olympics to be held next year, there are a variety of different views, the government did not discuss these issues within the government, the government will pay close attention to the development of the situation, the appropriate response.
Zhang Dunhan believes that the key still lies with the Beijing authorities, and he calls on the mainland to face up to the reasons behind the international community’s diverse views on next year’s Winter Olympics. The government’s core mission is to safeguard human rights and freedom, and this is a fundamental value that will not change.
Legislative President Yu Xi-kun recently issued an article saying that many people cannot accept goods containing Xinjiang blood and cotton because of the Chinese Communist Party’s serious violation of human rights in Xinjiang, and in solidarity with the Uighur people, Yu Xi-kun believes that Taiwan should further propose to consider moving to host the Winter Olympics. After You Xi-kun’s post, several DPP legislators followed up, suggesting that Taiwan refuse to participate in the Winter Olympics.
The cross-strait Olympic Association held its 23rd cross-strait sports exchange symposium on the 30th, and the two sides exchanged views via video message, co-chaired by Chinese Olympic Committee Chairman Lin Hongdao and Chinese Olympic Committee Chairman Gou Zhongwen. Taiwan’s official sports agency deputy director Lin Cheh-hong and group leader Hsu Hsiu-ling also each participated as executive members and members of the Chinese Olympic Committee.
