American author Kerry Gershaneck has stated that propaganda, censorship, disinformation, espionage, extortion, bribery, sexual seduction, coercion, assassination, kidnapping, physical assault, gang violence, cyber attacks, and malicious influence campaigns are among the various “political warfare” weapons used by the Chinese Communist Party against the Western free world “weapons. The ultimate goal of the CCP is to defeat the West without firing a single shot.
Schanek’s Political Warfare: Strategies for conflict China’s Plan to ‘Win Without Fighting’, published back in 2020, is a new and important tool in the fight against the Chinese Communist Party. Political Warfare: Strategies for conflict China’s Plan to ‘Win Without Fighting’), published in 2020, issued the above warning. He points out that this kind of war is called “political warfare” and also “over-the-top warfare,” which uses all means except direct military attack, i.e., a war in which the Chinese Communist Party uses everything without a bottom line.
Gschanek said Western liberal societies, represented by the United States, fell into a false sense of security after defeating the Soviet Union, believing that democracy had completely defeated communism, but ignoring another growing threat – China (the Chinese Communist Party). Some ideas suggest that the Communist regime will eventually become democratic as China increases international trade and engagement with the international community.
He noted that this ignorance has been pervasive in successive U.S. administrations since the end of the Cold War. Others who are already aware of the Communist threat have deliberately turned a blind eye to it. They thought “that might interfere with the funding of my next campaign. As a result, the United States was in a “death spiral” for years until President Trump took office.
Gershanek said the most successful tactic of the Chinese Communist Party in this political war is the “United Front. It has manipulated every aspect of the American political, business and cultural elite, and has been jokingly referred to as a “magic bullet” by Communist leaders. He noted that thousands of overseas groups, coordinated by the CCP’s United Front, exert political influence overseas to suppress dissent, gather intelligence, and facilitate technology transfers to China, among other activities. The investigation found that there are some 600 such groups in the United States alone, where they have operated with near impunity for years.
During his tenure at U.S. think tanks and academia, Gershanek found that CCP agents and enforcers, who were “very successful” in attracting analysts, academics and business leaders, were very popular among educational institutions and think tanks (in the United States).
Gershanek noted that when some Americans are targeted for influence operations, they are invited to dinner parties or flown to China. There, they would be received and cared for by Chinese Communist Party agents. He said that Americans who regularly interact with CCP unification agents are doing what the CCP wants them to do. Although they are not told to do so, they have become accustomed to mirroring the Chinese (CCP) position on almost any issue.
He commented that the Trump Administration period has begun to realize these serious threats, making a series of predatory actions to counter the Chinese Communist Party’s theft of intellectual property, forced technology transfer, espionage, and establishment of Confucius Institutes.
Gershanek said the United States needs to seriously identify and expose the Chinese Communist Party’s united front groups and agents and take legal action against them. In a broad sense, he noted, the United States needs not only to understand the nature of these threats, but also to come up with a comprehensive counter-strategy and establish appropriate institutions to defend against the CCP’s political warfare offensive. “If we can do that, we have a fighting chance,” he said, or we will be defeated.
Based on the foundation established by the Trump administration, Gershanek said he hopes the new administration will become more mature and smarter with more backbone and a greater understanding of the threat.
