U.N. in consultation with Chinese Communist Party seeks unrestricted access to Xinjiang

The Canadian Press today broadcast an interview with U.N. Secretary-General Rodrigo Guterres in which he said the United Nations is negotiating with the Chinese Communist Party to allow “unrestricted” access to Xinjiang to understand the situation of the Uighur people there.

According to U.S. and Australian human rights groups, at least 1 million Uighurs and other predominantly Muslim minorities are being held in re-Education camps in the Xinjiang region, where Chinese authorities are not only forcing people to work, but also forcing women to be sterilized.

Antonio Guterres told Canadian Broadcasting Co. that “the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is currently engaged in careful consultations with the Chinese Communist authorities.”

He noted, “I hope they can reach an agreement soon” to allow “unrestricted” access to China.

Guterres also mentioned that the Chinese Communist Party has repeatedly reiterated to him that “they want the mission to go ahead.”
