On Friday (March 26) President Trump issued a message regarding the “ongoing” Durham investigation. In a statement sent out by Trump, he wrote, “Where is Durham? Is he still alive and breathing? Will there be a Durham report? “
In May 2019, U.S. Attorney General William Barr appointed John Durham as special counsel to investigate the origins of the FBI’s Russia investigation and whether the Russia investigation was executed on a solid legal basis. The Durham investigation is classified as a criminal investigation by the Department of Justice.
The FBI began investigating whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to sway the outcome of the presidential election in July 2016. After nearly a year of investigation, it was inherited by special counsel Mueller, who ultimately did not find enough evidence to charge Trump and any of his associates with conspiring with Russia.
Durham’s investigation has so far led to one indictment. Kevin Clinesmith, a former FBI attorney, amended the email material in the FISA warrant application, which was filed in the early months of the Russia investigation to spy on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. The former FBI lawyer, who was sentenced to probation in January of this year.
Trump has long anticipated that the findings of this investigation would reveal serious wrongdoing by FBI insiders, and previously expressed his anger that the results of Durham’s investigation were not released sooner.
Durham has maintained an extremely low profile since the election last November, and his last public remarks were in February, when he confirmed that he would resign as Connecticut’s top federal prosecutor at the request of Biden, but would also continue to serve as special counsel to complete this investigation.
