Lawyer Ren Quanniu, who represented 12 Hong Kong people in the case, was asked to dissolve his law firm

The Chinese government recently asked Ren Quanniu, a human rights lawyer who represented 12 Hong Kong people in the “smuggling case” and the case of citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, to dissolve his law firm on his own.

According to Radio Hong Kong, Ren received a verbal notice from the Zhengzhou City Bar Association on March 28, requesting that his law firm, Henan Orbit Law Firm, be dissolved on a voluntary basis and that its four lawyers be transferred to other law firms.

Ren Quanniu had previously had his lawyer’s license revoked by the local government. Ren Quanniu told the media that this practice is illegal.

State Department spokesman Ned Price publicly expressed concern in early February about the revocation of the licenses of Ren Quanniu and Lu Siwei for their representation of 12 Hong Kong people, and urged the Chinese government to respect human rights and the rule of law.
