U.S. EPA Administrator to Visit Taiwan, Beijing Threatens Retaliation

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Friday that China is firmly opposed to any form of official U.S.-Taiwan relations, and that these positions are consistent and clear. According to Zhao Lijian, China will make justifiable and necessary responses according to the development of the situation.

Reuters reported today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator will visit Taiwan, and the Chinese Foreign Ministry said China is firmly opposed to any form of official U.S.-Taiwani ties. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian on Friday, “We urge the U.S. side to fully recognize the highly sensitive nature of the Taiwan issue, the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiqués between China and the U.S., to immediately cease any form of official contacts with Taiwan, and to deal with Taiwan-related issues in a prudent and appropriate manner so as not to undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and cooperation between China and the U.S. in relevant important areas. ”

According to the report, Taiwan’s Executive Yuan President Su Tseng-chang said Friday that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency chief will come to Taiwan at the invitation of Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Wu Zhao-she, and the two sides will discuss international cooperation on environmental issues. This is the third high-level U.S. official to visit Taiwan in four months after U.S. Health Secretary Azar’s visit in August, both of which sparked discontent in China.
