Fighting in Ukraine’s eastern Donbass region (Donbass) has intensified in recent days following a resumption of fighting. Four Ukrainian servicemen were killed and two others were wounded in the bombing on Friday (March 26, 2021). It was the highest loss of Life on the Kiev side in recent months in a war that has lasted seven years. The ceasefire agreement announced by the warring sides in August 2020 is considered to have come to an end.
Fighting on the Donbass front erupted Friday in Choumy, northeast of Donetsk, our RFI correspondent Stéphane Siohan reported from Kiev on Saturday (March 27, 2021). Four Ukrainian servicemen were killed in action and two others were wounded.
Ukraine fears escalation of fighting
Friday’s clashes resulted in the heaviest loss of life in Ukraine since a cease-fire was agreed in the east last August. However, fighting has been intensifying since mid-February. Nearly two dozen Ukrainian servicemen have been killed in action in a month. The current situation is also a reaction to the deterioration of diplomatic relations between Kiev and Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the deterioration of the situation in the Donbass region. Kiev called on France and Germany, which are involved in the Normandy Quartet talks on Ukraine (Format Normandie), to intervene in order to avoid escalation of the conflict.
