Rights Defense Network cited sources as disclosing on March 26 that Chinese Sichuan rights activist Chen Yunfei was taken away by police on Thursday evening. On Friday, police came back to his Home and sent his mother to a relative’s home in Wenjiang District, Chengdu. Friends speculate that Chen Yunfei is likely to be held in criminal detention by authorities.
According to reports, Chen Yunfei often lives in Chengdu and has moved several times because he was evicted by the government. If the above information is true, Chen Yunfei was arrested on the day of the second anniversary of his release from prison.
On March 25, 2015, Chen and more than 20 other rights activists went to Xinjin County, Chengdu, to visit the graves of Xiao Jie and Wu Guofeng, students who died on June 4, and were chased by hundreds of gun-wielding special police officers on their way back. On March 26, Chen was criminally detained by Xinjin County police on suspicion of “inciting subversion of state power” and “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”; on April 30 of the same year, he was formally arrested; the local prosecutor’s office subsequently dropped the charge of “inciting subversion of state power” and charged him only with picking quarrels and provoking trouble.
On March 31, 2017, Chen Yunfei was sentenced by the Chengdu Wuhou District Court to four years in prison for “provoking and provoking trouble,” and was released on March 25, 2019.
