From March 22 to 25, Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping visited Fujian Province, and the Communist Party’s official media created a lot of publicity about his trip. Among other things, the Communist Party newspaper People’s Daily and the official Communist Party media Xinhua News Agency and CCTV jointly disclosed for the first Time that Xi had served as a university president for six years.
On March 25, Xi reportedly visited Minjiang College in Fuzhou. Minjiang College was formerly known as Fuzhou Normal College of Higher Education and Minjiang Vocational University. According to official media, Xi served as president of Minjiang Vocational University for six years from 1990 to 1996, when he was secretary of the Fuzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party.
Footage from the official media report showed Xi visiting a display of Minjiang College’s history and applied schooling achievements, and addressing students and faculty.
It is reported that in 1984, Minjiang Vocational University was established with Yuan Qitong, then secretary of the Fuzhou Municipal Party Committee, as its president. Before Yuan Qitong left office, he suggested that the successor municipal party secretary should also be the president of Minjiang Vocational University. This gave Xi the opportunity to become the president of the university.
In his six years as president of Minjiang Vocational University, Xi has issued diplomas to 1,074 graduates, according to the report.
Fujian is where Xi made his official fortune. From 1985 to 2002, Xi worked in Fujian for 17 years.
