AIT: Promoting U.S.-Taiwan semiconductor cooperation is a U.S. policy priority

The head of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) in Taipei said that the United States and Taiwan are the most natural partners in the global semiconductor supply chain and that promoting such cooperation is a U.S. policy priority.

AIT Director Brent Christensen said this when he attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the TSMC Causeway fab in Miaoli, central Taiwan, on March 25. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen attended the ceremony.

Li said he “wants to reiterate the importance the U.S. government places on supply chain security issues” and that “both President Biden and President Tsai have wisely pointed out that the semiconductor industry is a key strategic priority and that this is not just in the area of economic innovation, but in the area of national security as well “.

The Biden Administration has placed special emphasis on ensuring the security of the supply chain; in addition to this, last year the U.S. also launched the ‘U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue’ (EPPD) with Taiwan,” Li said noted. Through this new mechanism, the U.S. and Taiwan will be able to strengthen existing areas of economic cooperation, build new economic partnerships, and create an alliance to counter China’s unfair economic and investment policies.”

He added: “The United States and Taiwan are the most natural partners in the global semiconductor supply chain; many U.S. and Taiwanese companies can be found up and down the semiconductor value chain. Therefore, supporting cooperation between U.S. and Taiwan companies in the semiconductor supply chain will continue to be a priority goal of AIT in the future.”

Li said, “For decades, Taiwan has been a highly trusted source of semiconductor manufacturing. The world, whether it’s the industry, governments, or even the military, knows that Taiwan will follow the rules of the road. That’s why the United States considers Taiwan one of our closest and most indispensable partners.”

At the ceremony, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen assured that the Taiwanese government would fully support the development of the semiconductor industry. She called the development of the semiconductor industry “the protection of the nation’s mountains.
