U.S.-Taiwan High Representative Celebrates Taiwan’s Donation to State Department for Education Programs in Syria

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) held an online ceremony at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday (Nov. 18) to celebrate the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office’s donation of $500,000 to the U.S. Department of State (TECRO) to support moderate educational programs in Islamic State-affected communities in northeastern Syria.

Ambassador Hsiao Mei-chin, Taiwan’s representative to the U.S., was joined by AIT Executive Director Ingrid Larson, Ambassador Atul Keshap, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Christopher Backemeyer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and David Schlaefer, Acting Deputy Special Envoy of the Global Coalition to Defeat Islamic State (D-ISIS).

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States said in a press release that the donation will help the Injaz program continue its important work to revitalize and strengthen the education sector in northeastern Syria and improve access to education for the local population. The program makes children and youth less vulnerable to the extremist ideology of ISIS by improving access to education and preparing students to re-enter or remain in the mainstream education system.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Kerschner emphasized the importance of this contribution by the U.S. Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in support of the goals of the Global Coalition to Defeat Islamic State.

He said, “TECRO’s contribution today to support the development of moderate education in northeastern Syria is a sign of our continued commitment to shared values and a concrete example of how Taiwan continues to be a reliable partner, an example of democratic governance, and a force for good in the world.

Taiwan is a partner in the 83-member Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State, which aims to confront the threat posed by the Islamic State and ultimately ensure its permanent defeat.
