Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks (R) challenges the Nevada election results in a joint session of Congress on Jan. 7.
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), a close ally of former President Trump who helped lead the Republican Party’s challenge to the 2020 presidential election results, announced Monday (22) that he will run for the U.S. Senate in 2022.
Brooks made the announcement at an event in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama, on Monday evening. He told the public, “Today, for the avoidance of any doubt, I’m announcing my candidacy for Senate in the great state of Alabama.”
Brooks, 66, is a six-term congressman who has become one of Trump’s staunchest allies by working hard to challenge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in his final months in office.
In a passionate speech Monday, Brooks painted a picture of a society besieged by the forces of evil “within our country. He highlighted the theft of the 2020 presidential election and warned that socialists are rapidly taking over America.
“We should be hopeful about the promise of a better future,” Brooks said, “but instead, look at the policies coming out of Washington, D.C. It’s fear, it’s deep concern.”
He was accompanied by Stephen Miller, a former senior White House staffer and longtime Trump adviser. Prior to that, Miller also served as a senior adviser to former Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Texas).
Minutes before Brooks’ speech, Miller addressed the crowd. He said, “No one has supported President Trump more than Brooks in the last four years, but now, I need you to support him, and I need you to support Brooks. You voted for Brooks, and he will continue to implement the ‘America First’ agenda.”
“The fight to save America, to save our country, our Constitution and our freedom starts in Alabama, and it starts now with your support for Brooks.” Miller added.
Sen. Richard Shelby, an 86-year-old Republican from Alabama, announced last month that he will retire and will not seek re-election in 2022. Brooks is likely to be the favorite to replace Shelby if he gets Trump’s support.
Trump is super popular in Alabama, a state he carried by more than 20 points in both 2016 and 2020. According to a new poll by Morning Consult, a data intelligence firm, Trump’s latest approval rating in the state is 62 percent.
Trump’s high approval rating suggests that his support will be decisive in the state’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate, which could spark a fierce race for Trump’s support.
Trump has yet to comment on the race, but Miller’s statement Monday has pushed Brooks as the only candidate in the state who is clearly loyal to the former president and his “America First” agenda.
