Belgium reiterates “strong” condemnation of Beijing sanctions to Chinese ambassador

The European Union sanctioned Chinese officials for human rights violations in Xinjiang and China was outraged and counter-sanctioned. 23rd, France, Germany, Denmark and Belgium summoned the Chinese ambassador. AFP said that Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès summoned Chinese Ambassador Cao Zhongming to Brussels. Chinese official media said that on the 23rd, Chinese Ambassador to Belgium Cao Zhongming met with Belgian Federal Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Foreign Minister’s Office Evelard and made serious representations on the unilateral sanctions imposed by the EU on China.

French Minister of European Affairs Clement Beaune said earlier on the 23rd that Chinese Ambassador to France Lu Shano had ignored the initial request of the Foreign Ministry. The Chinese Embassy in Paris tweeted that he could not go because of “travel problems”. The official Chinese media headline reads “France “summons” Chinese ambassador. Embassy response: No Time today, tomorrow!”

Beijing imposed a travel ban on 10 members of the European Parliament and European Union countries on the 22nd in retaliation for EU sanctions against China for cracking down on Uighurs. The German, Belgian and Danish foreign ministries have also summoned the Chinese ambassador on the 23rd to express their discontent.
