Foreign workers want to come to Canada to become the world’s number one working destination

A new report on global talent trends shows that the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the willingness of foreign workers to work in the countries they preferred to work in. Canada is favored over the United States.

A survey of 209,000 people in 190 countries conducted by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and The Network found that the plague pandemic has dampened interest in working in foreign countries.

The data show that only 50 percent of people are interested in working abroad between October 2020 and December 2020, down from 57 percent in 2018 and 64 percent in 2014.

Another factor affecting the ranking of global work destinations is a country’s response to the Epidemic. The likes of Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore and New Zealand, all of which have relatively low numbers of infected cases, are in the top 10; popular destinations, like Germany and France, have dropped two spots in the rankings; Italy and Spain don’t even squeeze into the top 10.

Many famous cities, such as New York, Barcelona and Rome, are now less attractive to foreign workers. Other cities less hit by the epidemic are becoming more popular, like Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

In the overall 2020 ranking, Canada surpassed the U.S., which topped the list in 2018, and is No. 1 globally, favored by respondents with master’s and doctoral degrees, workers with digital experience, and those under 30 years old.

The survey, released earlier this year in March, shows that the U.S. would rank No. 1 rather than No. 2 in 2020 when remote work workers are accounted for. about 57% of respondents would be open to remote work. These workers are still keen to work remotely for companies in the U.S. and Canada, but the epidemic has dampened their willingness to relocate.
