U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited France on Monday and gave an interview to the French newspaper Le Figaro to talk about U.S. foreign policy, including an extensive section on China.
Pompeo said that President Trump had identified the threat of China as early as the 2015-2016 election, saying that the United States took some time to establish a structural strategy and persuade the domestic, because many domestic industries have an interest in China. He said the U.S. then took aim abroad, such as launching a “Quad” security dialogue to deter China, and a united front with Europe.
From a historical standpoint, Pompeo said, it is important to try to convince allies to unite against China, even if some may think that betting on China is a good choice or may come at a cost in the short term, but in the long term, “if we give up, one day we’ll find ourselves facing a totalitarian government in China that is no longer a partner, but a colony of China.
Pompeo also stressed that some say that the United States is withdrawing from global affairs, but he said that the opposite is true, and that he believes that the West will prevail in the end and that Western values must be defended. Therefore, the United States is working with countries around the world, including France, to counter the Chinese Communist Party.
