German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today that the British variant of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become the main virus in Germany, indicating that Germany, Europe’s largest economy, is in the midst of a “new outbreak.
In a press conference in Berlin, Merkel said, “Basically, we have a new virus … which is more deadly, more contagious and has a longer transmission Time.”
Germany has seen an upsurge in confirmed COVID-19 cases, and Merkel has met overnight with the heads of 16 states in response, reversing a plan agreed earlier this month to gradually restart the economy and instead taking a tough stance against the Epidemic.
