ROK Defense Minister Seo Wook and recently appointed Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Christopher Miller called on July 18 and agreed to continue communication and strengthen the ROK-U.S. alliance. Miller also spoke with the defense ministers of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan after taking office.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the two defense ministers exchanged views on the results of the ROK-U.S. security meeting held last month, and the U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to provide defense for the ROK based on the ROK-U.S. Joint Defense Force. The two sides agreed on the need to maintain communication in order to deepen cooperation and agreed to continue to promote further development of the ROK-U.S. alliance in order to safeguard their common interests in the field of security.
In the call, Miller said the ROK-U.S. alliance is the longest-standing alliance in U.S. history and sets a model for other allies, according to a ROK Defense Ministry press release issued the same day. He stressed that he will maintain close cooperation with South Korea to develop the alliance in the future.
