A recent questionnaire survey conducted by The Japanese Society of Pediatrics revealed that, as of last August, one of the pregnant women diagnosed with the Chinese Communist virus (also known as New Coronavirus, COVID-19) had a newborn child born with the infection, which medical experts estimate to be mother-to-child, the first mother-to-child case of infection found in Japan.
According to the Central News Agency, the Japanese Society of Pediatrics, led by Ichiro Morioka, director of the Department of Pediatrics at Nihon University School of Medicine, recently conducted a questionnaire survey of the pediatrics departments of 1,124 medical institutions in Japan and found that by the end of August last year, 31 of these medical institutions had confirmed deliveries of pregnant women infected with the CCP virus, resulting in the birth of 52 newborns, one of whom tested positive for the virus at birth, while the remaining 51 babies were all negative. The remaining 51 babies were all negative.
Ichiro Morioka said that the health condition of the newborn, who was diagnosed with the disease after birth, did not have any problems, so it is assumed that the infection was transmitted from mother to child.
This is the first case of mother-to-child transmission of the CCP virus found in Japan. A few cases of mother-to-child transmission have also been reported in other countries.
Dr. Ichiro Morioka said that there is only one confirmed case out of 52, which means that the chance of a pregnant woman transmitting the virus directly to her baby is very low, and the symptoms of the infected baby are very mild, so he urged people not to worry too much about it. However, he also reminded pregnant women to take precautions against the disease.
