Julia Letlow became the first Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District on Saturday (March 20) when she easily won the by-election to replace her late husband.
Luke Letlow, a 41-year-old Loudoun Republican who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives last year, died on Dec. 29, just days before he was sworn in, from complications after contracting the Chinese Communist virus. His sudden death was obviously a great loss to both his Family and the Republican Party.
Happily, however, his widow is strong and determined to continue Luke’s unfinished mission. She pledged to defend Christian values, fight for the farming community, and more. On Saturday, she voted in the company of her two minor children.

Former President Trump had expressed his support for Julia’s candidacy earlier this month. On Saturday, he issued a statement reaffirming his support, stressing that Julia’s election is necessary to preserve Republican advocates of gun rights, border policy and military rights, and calling on voters in the Lousiana to come out and vote for her.
Julia won the district’s by-election by defeating 11 other candidates. She received 65 percent of the vote, compared to 27 percent for her Democratic opponent, Candy Christophe.
After her victory, she said, “This is an incredible moment, and it’s really hard to put into words. What was born out of the terrible tragedy of losing my husband Luke has become my mission to pass the torch in his honor and to serve the good people of Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District.”
Julia became the first Republican female member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Louisiana.
The Louisiana Republican Party also endorsed her, and she raised more money for her campaign than the other 11 candidates combined.
Julia’s win was unanimously recognized, with praise and congratulations from both Congressional House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Lousiana’s Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards (D).
