A State Department spokesman told the online media outlet that a delegation from the Biden administration “discussed the climate crisis” with a Chinese delegation in Alaska this week, but that the two sides had not formed a working group on the issue, contrary to Chinese media reports, Axios news site reported on Sunday. The Xinhua News Agency reported on 20 June that China and the United States would set up a joint working group on climate change.
More broadly, we know that China will not be able to successfully address the climate challenge without significant additional action,” the spokesman told Axios. In addition to its carbon-intensive investments abroad, China accounts for nearly 30 percent of global carbon emissions.”
He added that Communist Party President Xi Jinping‘s commitment to zero carbon emissions by 2060 is “an important step forward,” but said China needs to do more to meet the goals of the Paris agreement.
