Chen Zhaozhi, a retired professor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, has been in custody for more than a year after being charged with “provoking and provoking trouble” for posting information on the Internet such as “Wuhan virus is not a Chinese virus, but a new crown virus. Chen Zhaozhi, who suffers from brain degeneration, was recommended by the prosecution to be sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
Chen Zhaozhi’s defense attorney Ma Gangquan told Radio Free Asia, “The prosecutor’s office recommended a sentence of two years and six months. Because he has Alzheimer’s symptoms, his speech is slow, and the court won’t let him talk much. It was a public trial, but only his daughter was allowed to be present in the courtroom.”
Beijing citizen Ma Xinli ran for help after Chen Zhaozhi’s arrest. He argued that the authorities’ sentencing was based on political considerations, completely ignoring citizens’ freedom of expression and Chen Zhaozhi’s condition.
Ma Xinli said, “He should not be locked up for a single day. The Constitution provides that citizens have the right to freedom of expression, and he was merely expressing his personal opinions and practicing the rights granted to citizens under Article 35 of the Constitution. The public security authorities do not have the authority to arrest him, and he should not even be locked up for a day. The local police station also knows that Mr. Chen has Alzheimer’s disease, not to mention that Mr. Chen is innocent, he should not be punished if he really has committed a crime.”
Chen Zhaozhi, 69, is a retired professor and inventor from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and is said to be the first person to defend intellectual property rights in China. He has spoken out on behalf of the June 4 victims, demanding that Communist Party officials disclose their assets and publicly expressing his dissatisfaction with the system, for which he has been suppressed and arrested several times.
Chen Zhaozhi, a retired professor from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, was once injured by police during the course of his rights defense.
In February and March of last year, Chen commented on the controversy over the source of the “Chinese Communist virus”, saying that the “Wuhan pneumonia” was “made by the Chinese Communist Party” and criticizing the Communist Party for concealing the Epidemic and mishandling it.
Chen was subsequently detained by the Haidian District Dongsheng Police Station in Beijing on charges of “fabrication and intentional dissemination of false information” and later arrested on charges of “provoking and provoking trouble” and detained in the Haidian District Detention Center.
Chen Zhaozhi told his defense lawyer that after his arrest, he was repeatedly persuaded to confess to the crime, but to no avail. He refused to sign the interrogation transcript, insisting that he was exercising his right to freedom of expression and that the authorities’ arrest was purely out of retaliation, a form of “political persecution.
It is understood that Chen Zhaozhi suffers from degenerative brain disease, cerebral infarction, hypertension and other diseases, and his health is not good, so his Family has tried to apply for bail, but the police refused.
The trial on the 18th began in the morning and ended at noon, and no sentence was pronounced in court. Some people on the scene were warned by security: the courtyard is not allowed to enter, is hearing a big case.
