New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D)
Alyssa McGrath, a current aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, also came forward on Friday, March 19, to accuse Cuomo of making suggestive comments and other forms of sexual harassment against her. McGrath is the eighth woman to accuse Cuomo of sexual harassment.
According to the New York Times, McGrath said he often stared at her, commented on her appearance and made suggestive and ambiguous comments about her.
“He had a way of making you feel very comfortable around him, almost as if you were his friend,” McGrath said. “But when you detach from the encounter or conversation with him, you think, ‘I can’t believe I just had this interaction with the governor of New York.'”
A total of eight women have now accused Cuomo of sexual harassment or misconduct against them. The first accuser is from Manhattan, a 36-year-old named Lindsay Boylan. She said Cuomo fondled and kissed her without her consent while she was working for the New York State government.
Charlotte Bennett, 25, is another of Cuomo’s former aides. She said Cuomo sexually harassed her.
Anna Ruch, 33, Ana Liss, 35, Karen Hinton, 62, journalist Jessica Bakeman, 32, and a woman who asked not to be named have also made accusations against Cuomo.
The woman, who asked not to be named, is said to be a current Cuomo aide, according to the Times Union. McGrath said, “He (Cuomo) told me in no uncertain terms not to turn it in.”
Cuomo has consistently denied the allegations, arguing that he “said something that was misconstrued as unwanted flirting.” Cuomo’s lawyer told the New York Times, “Cuomo greeted men and women with hugs and kisses on the cheek, forehead or hand when he hugged them. While this may be outdated, none of this is remarkable.”
Several Democratic bigwigs, including U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), have called for Cuomo’s resignation amid mounting allegations. President Joe Biden also changed his tune earlier this week, saying that Cuomo should resign if the allegations are proven and suggesting that Cuomo may eventually face criminal prosecution.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James and the New York State Legislature are reportedly actively investigating Cuomo’s case.
