In Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, early morning temperatures reached minus 18 degrees. At the end of two days of high-level Sino-U.S. talks in this frigid place, it is worrying how loudly the Chinese Communist Party‘s “war wolves” howled and how weakly the U.S. side responded.
To sum up, the U.S. side fell into four traps set by the Chinese Communist Party during the talks.
First, the holding of high-level talks between the United States and China is itself a trap for the Chinese Communist Party. After Biden‘s inauguration on January 20, Blinken and Yang Jiechi and Biden and Xi Jinping spoke, each singing his own tune, judging from their public statements. In fact, as far as the current state of U.S.-China relations is concerned, it is the CCP that has begged the U.S.: don’t continue to decouple and sanction. Without a substantive offer (concession) from the Chinese side, there would be no need for the U.S. side to hold this meeting at all. However, the U.S. side has “invited” the CCP to come to the talks when its policy on dealing with the CCP is still unclear, and the CCP has always been good at “dialogue traps”. That’s why Yang Jiechi told CGTN, the official media of the CPC, that the two-day talks with the US in Alaska were “frank, constructive and useful” and that “we hope both sides can strengthen communication and exchange.”
Secondly, Yang Jiechi broke the rules of the talks by speaking for 16 minutes, which was eight times longer than the Time limit, and his speech was scripted, which was obviously intentional. In particular, Yang said in his speech, “I believe that the vast majority of countries in the world, without recognizing what the United States says as universal values, without recognizing what the United States says as international public opinion, and without recognizing the rules made by a few, is the so-called ‘rule-based’ international order “. This is a clear indication that in the future the CCP will no longer abide by the rules set by the United States. This is a very serious provocation – as U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Texas) told the Epoch Times in an email, “Just as the Chinese delegation refused to abide by the agreed-upon rules of the conference, so too does Beijing refuse to abide by the rules-based of the international order.” But the U.S. side sat there honestly and listened. U.S. conservative Jack Posobiec tweeted, “Clearly Blinken and Sullivan should have kicked out the Chinese delegates on behalf of the U.S. after the disrespect they received [from the Communist Party], but they didn’t. Continuing the talks would have been more humiliating.”
Third, Yang Jiechi drew a “red line” for the U.S. side, not the other way around. One, “You are not qualified to say in front of China that you talk to China from a position of strength.” Second, “the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese political system are sincerely supported by the Chinese people, and any attempt to change the Chinese social system is futile”. Third, the U.S. raised a series of security and human rights issues with the Chinese side, including the CCP’s persecution of Uighurs, its crackdown on Hong Kong, its economic coercion of allies, its cyber attacks on the U.S. and its acts of aggression against Taiwan, which Yang described as China’s internal affairs and resolutely opposed to U.S. interference, saying the U.S. should mind its own business instead of speaking out against China’s human rights and democracy. To sum up Yang Jiechi’s meaning into one sentence, it is what he said in his opening remarks: no one can strangle China (the CCP). This implies that the CCP is not afraid to confront the U.S. and uses the confrontation as a means to deter the U.S. side from retreating without a fight.
Fourth, the two sides confronted each other fiercely, and the U.S. side still begged the CCP to cooperate. After the talks, Blinken spoke at a press conference about very specific, areas where the U.S. and China could cooperate: “We also had a very frank conversation in those hours about some broad agendas, for example: on Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan and climate, where our interests intersect.” In addition, Biden Administration officials said they were open to easing some of the visa restrictions imposed on Chinese citizens under Trump. In this way, the offensive and defensive positions are displaced, and the U.S., which had the upper hand, gives way to a voluntary beating.
In short, the Chinese Communist Party is more cunning and evil than normal people can imagine, through this meeting, throwing stones, firepower reconnaissance, to find out the bottom card of the United States, it is expected that the next step will have a strong tactics to make, such as after eating a fixed Hong Kong, to extend the clutches to Taiwan. Of course, the United States also has a clear eye, such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (Mike Pompeo) today seems to review the first meeting between the United States and China in Alaska, he wrote: “Strength deters bad guys, weakness only invites war.” (Strength deters bad guys. Weakness begets war.)
The U.S. side has a good hand, but it can’t play it effectively. What is the problem? Ultimately, the U.S. policymakers must first recognize the evil nature of the Chinese Communist regime and know themselves and their opponents in order to win.
In response to Yang Jiechi’s comment that “no one can strangle China (CCP),” U.S. China expert Gordon G. Chang replied, “Actually, there is, and as Beijing’s behavior becomes more and more dangerous, leaving the world no choice, (the world) has no choice but to do so. “
Let’s hope U.S. policymakers hear this voice from Gordon Chang.
