On March 19, Image.com reported that data released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the Communist Party of China showed that the number of marriages registered in 31 provinces (cities) in 2020 was 8.131 million, falling below the 9 million mark, a new low since 2003 and only 60 percent of the peak in 2013. The data shows that Guangdong has the highest number of marriages, followed by Henan; but Henan also has the highest number of divorces, more than 270,000 pairs, followed by Sichuan, Jiangsu and Guangdong.
As for the reasons why unmarried workers do not plan to get married, more than half of the female respondents (64.1%) said “Marriage is not a must”; 43.5% of the respondents were worried about reducing the quality of Life due to marriage; male respondents did not support the economic conditions as the first reason for not planning to get married, accounting for 53.6%.
As for the divorce-to-marriage ratio, the data show that the three northeastern provinces are at the top of the list, namely Jilin, Heilongjiang and Liaoning, followed by Tianjin, with 71.51%, 67.16%, 65.83% and 63.62% respectively.
