Chile is one of the leading countries in terms of vaccination rates, with more than a third of its population having received their first dose or more of the new crown vaccine developed by China’s Kexing Biologicals, but so far the number of infections has not only not decreased, but is even worse than before.
Chile began its vaccination program early last month, and after receiving the first 4 million doses of the Kexing vaccine, it has continued to vaccinate frontline health care workers, the elderly and essential workers, with more than 33% of the country’s population having received at least one dose of the vaccine. However, the average daily number of new infections in the last seven days exceeded 5,000, with 44% in the metropolitan area. The hospital’s doctor Sebastian Ugarte said that even though the number of intensive care wards has doubled this week, it still can not relieve the situation of hospital beds saturation, some of the vaccinated patients over 70 years old died in the emergency room, and there are young patients with serious illness.
Chile’s President Pinera, who received the second dose of the vaccine on Friday, said he was quite close to his goal of completing the vaccination of 5 million people and promised to provide free vaccination to ensure the safety of the nation. Health officials said it will take more than 80 percent of the country’s population to complete two doses of the vaccine to reach herd immunity.
