The third wave of the new crown Epidemic in Germany is on the rise. Experts are calling for the tightening of epidemic prevention measures once again and the cancellation of the relaxation measures that were just implemented.
According to data released by the German CDC’s Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, there were 17,504 new infections in Germany on March 17, an increase of 3,000 cases compared to a week earlier. On the same day, 227 new coronary deaths were recorded, slightly fewer than a week earlier. However, all data are increasing rapidly. The number of new infections among 100,000 people in the past seven days jumped to 90, compared to 69.1 a week ago, when the German government was aiming for 50. The number of regenerative infections in Germany also remains high, currently at 1.06, which means that each new patient infects an average of 1.06 people. A number greater than 1 means that the epidemic will grow rapidly. It is widely believed that the third wave of the epidemic is related to the spread of a more infectious variant of the virus. The B.1.1.7 variant from the UK already accounts for 72% of all new infections in Germany. The total number of new coronavirus infections in Germany is 2,612,268, with 74,132 deaths from disease.
Medical doctors have called for a re-tightening of epidemic prevention measures to avoid paralysis of the health system. These include re-closing schools and kindergartens and returning to strict foot bans. But another tightening of epidemic prevention measures will be difficult for the public to accept.
Munich’s Mercury newspaper reported that Bavaria’s governor Söder has called for a “hard brake” and a stricter lockdown in light of the surge of new infections in Bavaria. Next Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the governors of the states will hold a summit on the new crown to discuss countermeasures. Media reports say that Merkel has actually made a decision to continue to extend the strict measures against the disease.
However, vaccination continues to be delayed. CDU party chairman Rachet called for a faster pace of vaccination. And the AstraZeneca vaccine continues to cause distress and confusion. German radio reported Thursday evening that after talks between the governors of several German states and European Commission President von der Leyen, they asked for quick approval of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V for the European market.
