About 150 people marched in front of the regional council of Strasbourg in the Grand Est region of France on Thursday to protest the construction of a factory by Chinese communications giant Huawei in the Alsatian town of Brumath in 2023, about 10 kilometers north of Strasbourg and the first factory to be built by Huawei outside mainland China, which will mainly produce equipment related to 5G technology for the European market and is expected to More than 500 jobs will be created there.
The French Human Rights Association organized the protest, with protesters holding signs in front of the Strasbourg regional council saying ” Huawei equals persecution of the Viets” and “No Huawei factory in Alsace”.
Brigitte Guiraud, head of the civil society association Civil Initiatives, said the factory where Huawei wants to produce 5G equipment would use a lot of local natural resources and could threaten national security, especially since Huawei’s site is close to a French military intelligence station. The head of the human rights association pointed out that Huawei is controlled by the Chinese government, which persecutes Uyghurs, Tibetans and Mongolians.
The protesters delivered a petition to Jean Rottner, the regional governor of France’s Grand Est region. Rottner told AFP that he was equally concerned about the situation of the Uyghurs in China and that he had suspended future cooperation plans with China.
Jeanne Barseghian, the mayor of Strasbourg and a Green Party member of the Regional Council of the Grand Est, called for an end to the persecution of the Uyghurs.
The protesters then marched in front of the Confucius Institute in Strasbourg, pointing out that the Confucius Institute is a tool for propaganda and infiltration by Beijing. In total, there are 17 Confucius Institutes in France.
