Nikkei News said on Wednesday (17) that some email accounts used by its overseas subsidiaries Nikkei China (Hong Kong) and Nikkei Hong Kong Branch had been hacked and the company had notified the Hong Kong authorities of the situation.
The hack is believed to have started in October last year and is suspected to have compromised the personal information of 1,644 overseas subscribers to Nikkei News International, Nikkei Asia and Nikkei Electronics, including names, email addresses, company names, addresses and phone numbers, including 24 cases involving credit card information. In addition, the information of the sender who sent the news to the Hong Kong branch is also suspected to have been leaked, but the information of subscribers in Japan was not affected.
NSE apologized for the inconvenience and concern caused by the incident and said it will do a better job of managing personal data to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
