In an unprecedented move to comply with new consumer protection regulations coming to Russia, Apple will add the option for consumers to pre-install native applications (apps) during the initial device setup phase.
Apple announced Tuesday that starting April 1, Russian consumers who purchase a new iPhone, iPad or Mac will be prompted to go to a new page in the Apple Store to pre-download their country’s apps when they first set up their device. App.
Apple said the adjustment was made to comply with Russian regulations. Russia’s new consumer protection law, which will go into effect in April, requires pre-installation of Russian software. Russia signed the bill in 2019, in part to help its app developers.
This will be the first Time Apple will allow consumers to install non-Apple software during the initial device setup phase. Apple added country-specific features in its last mobile operating system update, such as adding map viewing to the Chinese version of the device, but bypassed other pre-installed general apps, such as those pre-installed by mobile network operators on Android devices.
