A man in Jixi, Anhui Province, broke the lock of the door and entered the ancestral shrine with an axe after drinking, slashing two doors and causing damage to the shrine. Jixi County Procuratorate recently recommended that the suspect be sentenced to 10 months in prison.
Hong Kong‘s Sing Tao Daily reported on October 17 that the Jixi Prosecutor’s Office in Anhui Province announced the indictment on October 15, saying that Ge, a 49-year-old man from Jixi, came to the Hu Ancestral Hall with an axe after drinking alcohol at 9 p.m. on October 3 last year, broke the lock of the outer door of the hall and then entered the hall.
He used the axe to chop the two doors leading to the inner courtyard with the god of the gate, and when they did not open, he used both hands to drag and push them to the ground. He then pushed down the four wooden doors of the inner hall, which were side by side with the gate, causing different degrees of damage to the gate, the gate god, the side door, the stone foundation and other cultural relics.
The repair cost of the damaged gate, gate god, side door is estimated at 32,000 yuan (RMB, the same below), and the loss price of the damaged stone base is estimated at 300 yuan.
The Jixi County Prosecutor’s Office believes that Ge, knowing that the Hu Ancestral Hall is a national key cultural relic protection unit, should be held criminally liable for intentional destruction of cultural relics. It is recommended that he be sentenced to 10 months in prison and a fine of 300 yuan RMB.
