Mainland bleached yam proliferated for years with local “umbrella”

Many yams in the mainland market are processed with bleaching agents and have been for years. Some people in charge of the processing plant directly said that “there is local protection”. Some mainland people lamented that just out of the lean sheep, and then bleached yam.

The mainland media reported that mainland yam suppliers and vendors use “water washing” and “rinsed water” to describe the surface of the white yam, but in fact these yams are processed by bleaching agents.

A yam “processing plant” in Baoding City, Hebei Province, the person in charge said: “Several supermarkets supply, so many years has been fine, now are ‘washed’ goods, 99% are ‘ washed’.”

Yam processing plant in charge: there is a local “umbrella”

Baoding, Hebei is one of the main yam production areas on the mainland, the products are sold throughout the mainland.

Baoding City, a number of yam processing plants have bleaching “assembly line”. For example, one factory has two pools of Medicine and four pools of clean water, each soaking 3,000 pounds of yam at the same Time, bleaching about a dozen tons per day.

Workers washed yam into sodium hypochlorite bleach, according to the degree of white yam to determine the soaking time, generally soaked for an hour, and then washed with water. However, the washed yam has a bleach smell, workers said, “a while will naturally evaporate.”

For bleaching yam wastewater is directly discharged, the factory manager said, “subject to local protection, the other side (on the direct discharge of wastewater) turn a blind eye.”

“Sold by the truckload every day”

In Beijing‘s largest wholesale market of agricultural products “Xinfa Di”, many yam surface white, the vendor revealed that this white yam are bleached. The general white yam 10 yuan per catty (RMB, the same below), with the soil of the yam 8 yuan per catty.

The vendor said that the whole market is like this, and every day the whole truck is sold. It is reported that Xinfa Di’s agricultural products are supplied to Beijing, but also sold to the northeast, Inner Mongolia and many other places.

The vendor said that bleached yam has been five or six years, “from five or six years ago after the rise of bleaching, now many yams on the market are bleached, about a thousand tons a day, especially to Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities.”

Another wholesaler revealed that there was a batch of yam before the New Year this year, the day after bleaching on the truck, there was still water on the yam, when the test failed, but afterwards did not transport away, but outside to dry for 2 days, and then back to the market sales.

Yam processing plant workers bluntly, they themselves will not eat these bleached yams, only eat the original color.

The public: just lean sheep and bleached yam

After the news came to light, the Baoding municipal government said it would carry out verification, but there was no follow-up after that. A microblogger posted on March 16: “I just want to ask what happened to yesterday’s bleached yam, someone checked it out, after a day without a shadow.”

Another netizen said, “Lean sheep, yam bleaching.”

According to recent media sources, an important sheep farming base in Hebei Province, adding lean meat extract in the feed. A feed salesman said that the addition of lean meat essence such things “almost a decade. In addition, Shandong found water-injected lamb, using duck meat to pass off as lamb.

A netizen tweeted on March 15: “These things will not disappear from the tables of Chinese people for no reason until the special offerings of leaders and cadres at all levels are abolished.”
