Tensions in Myanmar caused by the military coup in early February have recently shown signs of escalation, with China having asked state-owned companies in the country to withdraw non-essential employees.
Burma experienced another day of riots and protests this Monday, following protests in many parts of the country last weekend. According to the Washington Post, at least 20 people died on Monday. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a local watchdog group, said at least 180 people have been killed in clashes since the coup.
The Global Times, an official Chinese media outlet, revealed that 32 Chinese-funded enterprises have been damaged in the violence, with economic losses amounting to 240 million yuan.
Myanmar state radio and television reported that martial law has been imposed in several districts in the economic hub city of Yangon and in several areas of Mandalay.
