Some models of Apple’s iPhones may be experiencing discoloration issues, with users reporting that the aluminum cases of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 are losing their color. iphone 12 offers consumers a variety of color options for the sides and back of the device. However, the back is protected by a glass back panel, but the exposed sides are apparently causing embarrassment for some users.
In one example reported by SvetApple, a red iPhone 12 was found to have noticeable discoloration on one of the sides. The user who experienced the problem claimed that it used this iPhone normally and in a similar way to how it was used with the iPhone XR, which was unaffected by the fading.
This report is not the first complaint about the fading color of the iPhone device’s case. Posts on Apple’s support forums mention the same issue affecting the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE2. The problem is not limited to red, as black and mint green have all been shown to have the issue. The discoloration only affects the aluminum frame, which is the only part that appears to change color.
One theory is that Apple’s process of applying color to the iPhone may be wrong. While anodized iPhones have a more durable coating, the process is limited to just a few colors, meaning that colored iPhones require other technology and that the treatment is still only a surface coating.
Users who raised the issue of iPhone discoloration also reported the problem to Apple in hopes of having Apple repair or replace their devices, but were mostly told it was just a cosmetic issue and that officials would not be responsible for the warranty.
This is not the first Time that iPhone users have had to deal with discoloration, as in 2009, there were reports that the white plastic of the iPhone 3GS would discolor due to overheating.
