Ireland recommends delaying use of AstraZeneca vaccine

Ireland’s Department of health said on Sunday that the country’s Advisory Committee on Immunization recommended a temporary suspension of the AstraZeneca New Crown vaccine because of new information received from the Norwegian Medicines Agency about the vaccine.

Ireland’s deputy chief medical officer, Dr. Ronan Green, recommended in a statement that Ireland hold off on the AstraZeneca vaccine, citing concerns that the vaccine could cause “blood clotting” problems in vaccine recipients.

Three Norwegian health workers are being treated in hospital for bleeding, blood clots and low platelet counts after recently receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, Norwegian health authorities said Saturday.

AstraZeneca vaccinations reportedly account for nearly 20 percent of the 570,000 vaccines administered in Ireland, mainly to health care workers. The Irish Advisory Committee on Immunization, which said the agency took precautions until more information was received, has met late Sunday.
