Do these seven little things when you first join the company

I love making lists, and I think I’m a list person: I have a shopping list, a to-do list, a packing list, and a checklist on my front door. I have a shopping list, a to-do list, a packing list, and a checklist on my front door at Home. At work, I have my assistant make lists for various SOPs, and of course, lists of books I want to buy, movies I want to see, topics I want to write about, and so on. I think strangers reading these lists probably have a 60% to 70% grasp of my Life!

Today, I’m going to share a long-held list that has been in my computer for a while before I dug it up. This list is a self-reminder from the old days when I went on-board to a new company, and it usually comes in handy during the first week: it’s a “must-do list for the first week in a new job”.

Over the years, I’ve tweaked it every Time I’ve changed jobs, and I’ve eventually streamlined it to the following seven items.

√ Choose a location near the aisle
√Prepare candy cookies
√Memorize colleagues’ names and extensions
√Practice answering phone lines silently
√After the introduction of the supervisor, the second self-introduction
√Practice chatting for 60 seconds on common points
√Exploration of pantry and smoking area

Some of these you can probably understand, some may be inexplicable, this will explain for you.

  1. Choose a location near the aisle

If the company has helped you to arrange a seat, no choice, then of course, meekly accept. But when it comes to the time to choose, I will definitely choose the office in the main traffic lanes, the place where people come and go, and the closer to the boss the better. I know that most people choose the opposite of me, and those who have attended life seminars should have heard me talk about this reason.

Psychologists have found that there are six “heart locks” to open in order to effectively influence others, one of which is the “principle of preference”: people are willing to work with you in the end, often just like you as a person, and one of the conditions for liking is “Familiarity”. When I become a newcomer in the office, I will try to let more people (especially the boss) feel my presence and get used to my presence, and in a static way, not in a high-profile way. As for those who choose a hidden corner as soon as you enter the company, in fact, we all know by heart that you want to avoid the eyes of the boss or colleagues to do their own thing (even if you are not others will think so), and frankly I will be worried about your future ah!

  1. Prepare candy cookies

This point should not be difficult to guess, often put some snacks on the table and colleagues to share, you can establish a relaxed communication environment, in addition to the establishment of “positive association”! What does that mean? Absorption of sugar will make people happy and satisfied, and you are right in front of you, of course, there will be empathy effect! This is why couples must be in the restaurant date reason.

But remember not to be too pretentious, go to Costco to carry a large bucket of snacks on the table, this is the office and not the New Year’s Eve street, okay? The trap is too obvious is not to bait the prey. Put some snacks on the table “without thinking”, it looks like you want to eat, but one person obviously can not eat the whole amount. I have an argument that I grew up with a weak stomach and was advised by my doctor to eat small, frequent meals, so I often get hungry. (This is also true!)

  1. memorize colleagues’ names and extensions

Communication guru Dale Carnegie said. Carnegie said, “name” is the most pleasant sound. The faster you can remember your colleagues’ names and call them with the correct pronunciation, the better respect you can show during your first week at work. The extension should also be memorized, because newcomers often have the opportunity to stay in their seats (old birds are going to meetings or business meetings), if the call comes to you (this part please do not dodge), and smoothly transfer to the right person, this is definitely a big plus!

  1. Silent practice of answering the phone lines

Continuing from the previous article, when receiving a phone call, newcomers always panic. But in fact, think about it, this may be your first external (customers, suppliers, other departments) business contact into the company, if you pick up the phone, you can respond with the general attitude of an old bird, even if it is just a few seconds to transfer, I dare say your boss colleagues heard, will definitely nod silently: Well, this boy / sister has the style of a great general!

  1. Introduce yourself again after the introduction of the supervisor

Newly appointed supervisor will always take the newcomer parade. I don’t know about you, but I always feel that this round of meeting puts a lot of pressure on people, and the other party is also very formal, always hoping that the awkwardness will end soon. So, I usually choose another appropriate time to go over to my colleague’s seat to introduce myself in person again. The second meeting because there are only two people, the atmosphere becomes much more relaxed, you can really talk about something, but also can deepen the impression of each other. As for how to talk, please refer to the next article: 60-second common ground chatting exercise.

6.60 seconds of common ground chatting exercise

This is an important exercise, and it’s a good idea to practice it! You can’t have a big conversation with your colleagues in the office, especially if you’re new. So you have to find out what you have in common with each other in a very short period of time. For example, if you go to the same school, have two children, live in Panchiao, have a dog, and have a tongue that touches the tip of your nose…it doesn’t really matter if it’s a “coincidence” or not, the important thing is to find common ground in the conversation. Benefit one, another basis of the “preference principle” mentioned earlier is “similarity”, people are naturally attracted to similar people, so we need to establish common ground between the two sides. Benefit two, to help you remember yourself. The first week to meet a lot of people, it is easy to get confused, you can rely on common ground to correctly identify the person, see each other’s mind can be remembered: ah, this is also living in Jingmei director, that is the cat Jenny.

  1. Pantry, smoking area to explore

There are so-called “sub-areas” in the office, where most of the informal exchange of information (office workers should know what I mean). These places have a certain sensitivity, newcomers are not recommended to touch directly, unless you can pinpoint very well. I myself, when I arrive at a new environment, will observe these places a little (to pour a glass of water, pass by the stairwell, go to the bathroom), by the way, to see who is in it, but never actively join the climbing conversation. Why do you do this? Workplace politics, of course! If you find a colleague who is particularly enthusiastic about you as soon as you start your job, and that person often whispers to others in these sub-areas and silences them as soon as they see you coming, watch out for such a colleague. By the way, my attitude toward workplace politics, there are people have politics, the workplace itself is a political arena, since the workplace but want to avoid politics is impractical, rather than carefully study to master the “Bureau”. Only for newcomers, there is not enough time to accumulate information, and at this time must be careful not to be easily involved in any circle.

The above is my personal experience, the graduation season or after the year a lot of people switch to a new environment, this personal list of treasures for your reference!
