The BBC reports that Alberto Fernandez was travelling in a minibus through a community center in Chubut when a large number of people came to the scene to protest against the open-pit mining plan.
After the minibus slowly broke away from the crowd, it was found that the windows were broken in several places.
Fernandez’s trip was to inspect an area devastated by a forest fire that has destroyed at least 200 houses, killed one person, injured many others and left 11 others missing. Several towns have been forced to lose water or electricity.
The cause of the fires has not yet been determined, but the Argentine Interior Ministry believes that many of the fires were caused by human arson. The fires have spread to several towns near the foothills of the Andes and have burned some 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) of forest.
The protest is against plans to resume open-pit mining in Chubut. According to the Clarín newspaper, the protesters are angry at the government’s proposal to allow large-scale projects to restart in the area, which is rich in Gold, silver and uranium mines.
