California’s new proposal: children’s products are not classified by gender, the violation of the fine of $ thousand

California AB1018, if passed, would prohibit most items in the children’s section of department stores with more than 500 employees from being sorted by gender starting January 1, 2024. Pictured is the toy section of Kohl’s department store.

The bill, originally introduced in February 2020 by Rep. Evan Low (D-Campbell) as AB2826 (19R), failed to pass. The bill argues that all children’s products cannot be displayed and sold separately in the traditional sense of “girls” and “boys.

The new version introduced on February 18 this year has changes, such as “all” was replaced with “most”, that is, most of the child care supplies, clothing and toys, etc., to be uniformly displayed and sold in the same area, regardless of gender.

AB1018 also imposes requirements on the labeling of merchandise, such as the labeling of children’s products, clothing and toys may not state that the product is intended for boys or girls.

Darren said the bill was inspired by a staff member whose daughter said she wanted something in the boys’ section, FOX11 reported.
