Former U.S. President Donald Trump (Trump) speaks at the American Conservative Union Conference (CPAC) at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Florida, Feb. 28, 2021.
Former President Donald Trump (R-Texas), through his advisers, warned that some Democratic lawmakers are pushing an election-specific reform bill.
According to Jason Miller in an interview with “War Room Pandemic,” Trump said in reference to the HR1 bill, “We have to stop this. We can’t let it pass.”
In March, the H.R. 1 bill, also known as the “For the People Act,” passed the House largely along party lines. The bill would broaden access and coverage by expanding voter registration, mail-in voting, early voting, and including election security measures. Since the bill would require a 60-vote majority to pass, H.R. 1 would face a major hurdle to pass in the Senate.
Miller said, “Here’s what he (Trump) said: ‘The media wants to forget what happened in 2020, I don’t, we have a lot of work to do.'” Miller also revealed on the Steve Bannon hosted show, “He said, ‘The media may want to forget what happened in 2020. But I don’t. We’re not going to forget what happened, and we have to stop this bill.”
But Democrats, including Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., said the bill is a “comprehensive anti-corruption and pan-democratic package of legislation” that “will protect and expand voting rights, restore integrity to government, and put the the needs and priorities of the American people over special interests.”
Other Democrats, including Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes of Maryland, said in response that the bill would “(reaffirm) Congress’ power to regulate money in politics and overturn the Supreme Court’s erroneous ‘Citizens United decision’ ruling.”
Since leaving office on Jan. 20, Trump has made only one public speech. He has mostly communicated via email after Twitter suspended his account.
During an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference late last month, Trump used some critical terms to describe H.R. 1.
The former president told an audience on Feb. 28, “Democrats in Congress are racing to pass a blatantly unconstitutional bill, the so-called HR1 bill, that attacks the First Amendment and the integrity of our elections. Do you know what the HR1 bill is? It’s a disaster.”
Trump said, “Their bill would severely restrict political speech, empower the federal government to silence dissidents, and turn the Federal Election Commission (FEC) into a partisan political weapon. In addition, it effectively eliminates nationwide requirements for voter ID …… It effectively ends all registration deadlines.” Trump added, “Can you believe it?”
Other Republicans have recently issued similar warnings on the subject.
But at the state level, 43 states had continued to implement, pre-filed or introduced more than 250 bills restricting voting rights as of the end of last month, according to the left-leaning Brennan Center for Justice. But the group found that in 43 states, more than 700 bills have been pushed to expand voting rights.
