According to the Voice of America, the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet, headquartered in Yokosuka, Japan, said in a statement March 10 that the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn carried out its scheduled military mission and passed through the Taiwan Strait on the same day local time.
As the largest forward-deployed fleet in the U.S. Navy, the Seventh Fleet regularly interacts with 35 maritime nations in the region to maintain freedom and openness in the Indo-Pacific region, the statement said. “The USS John Finn, a guided-missile destroyer equipped with the SHIELD combat system, is the U.S. Navy’s lead ship and is currently assigned to the USS Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which is operating in the Indo-Pacific region.
The press release from the Seventh Fleet also included two videos and photos of the USS Finn passing through the Taiwan Strait, including one showing the ship’s missile launch platform with 32 launchers and another showing a sailor on deck using binoculars to observe the surrounding water.
The Pentagon said the U.S. military is committed to freedom and openness in the Indo-Pacific region and will continue to fly, sail and conduct missions wherever international law allows.
The Biden Administration has insisted it will stand with regional allies such as Taiwan based on shared prosperity, security and values, and continue to assist Taiwan in maintaining adequate self-defense capabilities.
