U.S. Sanctions Two Adult Children of Burma Army Commander

The U.S. government has imposed sanctions on Aung Pyae Sone and Khin Thiri Thet Mon, the adult children of Burma’s army commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced the sanctions on Wednesday (March 10). The Treasury Department accused Min Aung Hlaing of being the “primary actor in the overthrow of Burma’s democratically elected government.

A press release from the Treasury Department said, “Aung Pyi Son and Khin Thirith Mon have various business holdings that directly benefit from their father’s position and malign influence.”

All property and interests in property owned by both of them “50 percent or more, directly or indirectly, including individually or jointly with other prohibited persons, and located in the United States or owned or controlled by U.S. legal persons” will be frozen.

The United States has called for the immediate release of National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, ousted President Win Myint, and protesters, journalists and human rights activists who have been unjustly detained since Feb. 1.

Last month, the U.S. announced sanctions against the military regime in Burma. Since 2017, the U.S. has sanctioned those who have committed atrocities against the Rohingya, including General Min Aung Hlaing and his deputy commander, General Soe Win (Soe Win).
