Today, March 10, marks the 62nd anniversary of the Lhasa riots, and Beijing has named a warship the “Lhasa Ship” on the eve of this sensitive day, prompting protests from Tibetans.
The Voice of Tibet said on March 9, “The second large destroyer of the Chinese Communist Navy was unveiled recently and was officially named the “Lhasa Ship”. The announcement was deliberately timed to coincide with the “Tibetan Freedom and Resistance Day” to showcase its military might and spark protests from Tibetans.
In a statement released on March 8, Free Tibet condemned the move as “disgusting” and noted that both Lhasa, Tibet and the so-called “Lhasa Ship” are filled with members of the Chinese military.
The warship has become part of an increasingly aggressive foreign policy since Xi Jinping took office,” said John Jones, head of the initiative, in a statement. He denounced the repeated violent repression of Lhasa, Tibet, by the Chinese Communist authorities and the naming of the warship after the site as an unquestionable insult to the Tibetan people.”
